One World Anchor Hosts Captivating Talent Show in Fort Lee

By Shuheng Yan

One World Anchor (OWA)’s New Jersey branch hosted its Junior Talent Show in collaboration with Fort Lee Chinese American Community Association (FLCA) on 28th August 2024 at the Fort Lee Recreation Center; the event begot a display of the talents of the community.

Official preparation for the event began when OWA leaders, undeterred by summer heat, advertised the event to shop owners on Fort Lee’s Main Street. Additionally, the team also collected donations from local businesses.

Some OWA members displayed their culinary skills by preparing snacks for donations; other volunteers demonstrated their arts-and-crafts skills by creating intricate gifts for the community. This experience contributed to the volunteers feeling a sense of accomplishment.

At 9 am, OWA volunteers arrived onsite to prepare for the event. This included the preparation of the stage, the speakers, and relevant instruments for performers. OWA leadership present for the event also conducted a brief but productive meeting during this time. For many volunteers, this short segment was an opportunity to communicate with each other vis-a-vis.

Captivated by an atmosphere of applause, the performances began at 10 am. Some notable performances included a blindfolded piano-playing and hip-hop segment. Hongyuan Zhu, a postgraduate student at the University of Columbia, demonstrated an experiment regarding the harmful effects of carbonated drinks. Members of the audience recorded videos and even participated in the aforementioned science experiment, a testament to the event’s success in facilitating engagement. The diverse nature of the performances instilled a sense of festivity in the heart of every participant and audience alike.

Overall, OWA’s prior preparations culminated in a successful day of talented youth displaying their dedication and grit. The performances left the community with eager anticipation for next year’s event and with a more comprehensive understanding of OWA’s mission.
